How much does Avalara cost? The Core Compliance + SST Services plan is $69/month ($699/year). Avalara also charges $48 per state filing and $403 per state registration. Higher tiers aren't published; you'll need a quote for those.

Typical Avalara pricing

Headline prices like “starts at $X” rarely match what a real ecommerce brand pays. Here's what Avalara costs for two typical profiles. Both assume Shopify, monthly filing cadence, annual billing, and a typical $120 AOV. Plug in your own numbers in the calculator.

What this estimate assumes

  • This is Avalara's published list price, shown as a floor rather than an exact figure. Avalara publishes the per-state rate but not the transaction limits, included return counts, or overage rates behind it, and its own pricing-page FAQ still says cost factors include transaction volume and integration footprint.
  • It is a list price, not a transactable one. Every plan CTA is a sales contact form; there is no self-serve checkout, and Avalara's Returns and small-business pages remain quote-only.
  • Avalara's Core plans support a fixed integration list (Amazon, BigCommerce, DualEntry, eBay, Etsy, Miva, QuickBooks, Sage 50, Shopify, Shopify Marketplace Connect, Stripe, TikTok, Walmart, WooCommerce). Every ERP — NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, Acumatica — is Custom-plan-only and therefore quote-only at any revenue level.
  • The SST rate is not a blended rate. Avalara's fine print: state-funded services apply only to SST-eligible transactions in participating states and only for qualifying volunteer sellers; in non-SST states, or where the volunteer-seller test isn't met, standard pricing applies. This estimate bills SST states at the SST rate and every other filing state at the standard rate.
  • Volunteer-seller eligibility is a physical-presence test, not a volume test: no fixed place of business in the state for more than 30 days, under $50,000 of property, under $50,000 of payroll, and under 25% of total property or payroll in the state.
  • Avalara markets SST coverage in 'up to 25 states'. That is the 24 SST member states plus Pennsylvania, which Avalara describes as an analogous program rather than SST membership.
  • Implementation and onboarding fees and per-transaction overages are additional and are not published.
  • Above $50M in annual revenue Avalara routes buyers to its quote-only Custom plan.

Pricing transparency

Partial

Some plans are public, others are quote-only. You can budget the bottom tier; everything else takes a call.

Upgraded from opaque in August 2026, but only partially. Avalara now publishes per-state list pricing for its core compliance bundle ($79/state/month, or $69/state/month with SST services), corroborated across roughly a dozen Avalara pages plus G2 and TrustRadius. Three things stop it being 'transparent'. The published plans support only 15 named non-ERP integrations, so every ERP buyer is quote-only at any revenue; the $50M+ segment remains quote-only; and the plans disclose no transaction limits, included return counts, per-filing fees, overage rates, or implementation fees, while the same page's FAQ still describes volume-based pricing. There is also no self-serve checkout — every CTA is a sales contact form, and the Returns and small-business pages remain quote-only. Ancillary products (License Guidance $119, registration $403/location, 1099 & W-9) continue to carry public per-unit pricing.

What real contracts include

The pricing table above is the AvaTax base. Real contracts almost always include additional line items that aren't in any quote summary. These are the patterns that appear most consistently in public buyer reviews and third-party aggregator commentary:

  • The platform connector is a separate line item, typically $5,000–$15,000/year. AvaTax does not include the integration to Shopify, NetSuite, BigCommerce, or your ERP. That is a separate purchase. One buyer-reported Shopify connector quote was $7,400/year for 15,000 transactions, distinct from filing fees. ERP connectors (SAP, Oracle, Dynamics) routinely run higher.[1][2]

  • Calculation-only is a real, smaller tier, typically $4,000–$7,000/year. If you only need Avalara to calculate tax (not file returns), the contract is materially smaller, usually the connector plus standard support and no Returns module. Worth knowing because aggregator headline ranges quote AvaTax + Returns bundles, which is a different product mix from calculation-only.[1][3]

  • Home-rule states are billed as multiple filings, not one. Colorado has 70+ self-collecting home-rule cities (Denver, Boulder, Aurora, Lakewood, and dozens more) that each require their own return. Avalara bills each one separately. A seller filing in Colorado and Alaska may see their effective filing count run 3–5× their state count. Avalara documents this in its own knowledge center.[4][5]

  • Renewal increases of 2–3× year-over-year are widely reported. Public reviews on G2 and TrustRadius consistently flag steep renewal hikes, often communicated through the renewal invoice rather than a planning conversation. Budget accordingly when modeling year-2 cost.[6][7]
